PARTS OF SPEECH

Parts of Speech-
Words are divided into different kinds or classes, called parts of speech. According to their use or the work they do in sentence the parts of speech are divided into eight in number. Thus a name given to a word based on its job in a sentence is defined as parts of speech.

They are-
  1. Noun
  2. Verb
  3. Pronoun
  4. Adjective
  5. Adverb
  6. Preposition
  7. Conjunction
  8. Interjection


1. Noun is defined as the name of a person, place, animal, thing, feeling, idea etc. In short noun is a naming word.

  • Person-boy girl, teacher, Danish, the President, father etc.
  • Place- Delhi, Ganga, school, playground etc.
  • Thing- pen, car, book, toilet etc.
  • Idea- liberty, bravery, happiness, fear etc.

       Eg. Kolkata is on Hooghly.
             Akbar was a great king.
             Revathi is a good girl.

2. Verb is the most important word in a sentences. It express action or state of being.

  • Action-run, kick, jump, play, swim etc.
  • State of being- is, am, was, were, are etc.

  Eg- I like ice-cream.
        Mylan plays cricket three times a week.
        I am a teacher.

3. Pronoun are the words that tell more about a noun. It is used instead of a noun.
   Eg- Priya is a good dancer, she loves dancing.
        Jaya is absent, because he is ill.

4. Adjective is a word used to add something to the meaning of a noun or pronoun.
Eg- She is a brave girl.
      Father gave me five rupees.
      He is weird.

5. Adverb are words that modify a verb, an adjective or an adverb. It deal with question form like how, when, where.


  • How- quickly, strangely, beautifully, loudly, happily etc.

  She runs quickly.

  • When- now, then, today, yesterday, soon etc.

               I ran yesterday.

  • Where- there, here, up, down etc.

               I ran there.

     Eg. The flower is very beautiful.
           She is walking slowly.

6. Preposition is a word that is placed before a noun or pronoun to show the relationships in time, place and position.

  • Space- in, below, above, over, under etc.
  • Time- during, after, at etc.

      Eg- I will see you on Monday.
            There is a bridge over the river.

7. Conjunction is a word which joins together words or sentences.
There are three types of conjunction-

  • Coordinating- for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

                         (FANBOYS)

  • Correlative- either/or, neither/nor, both/and
  • Subordinating- before, after, until, during, whereas etc.

     Eg-Rima and Milan are good friends.
           I didn’t go to college today because it             was raining.
           He is not only rich but also honest.

8. Interjection is a word which express some sudden feelings. These words bear no grammatical connection. They are followed by an exclamation mark.
     Eg- Aww! Just look at the kitten.
           Hurrah! We won the game.
           Wow! That’s really a great news.
