Lajo Jose played a major role in waking up the stagnant Malayalam thriller world. Coffee House, a realistic psychological crime thriller, tells the story of five unexpected murders at a coffee house in Kottayam, a rape case, the ensuing investigations, the arrests, the pronouncement of the death sentence and finally a journalist who comes down to prove his innocence. Esther Emmanuel, a journalist, works for a large circulation weekly in Kottayam. There are a lot of things going on around us that come into the life of Esther, who has been living alone for thirty years. Esther was the one who sparked the arrest of Benjamin in that case by creating social media campaigns when evidence was delayed five years ago in the Coffee House murders. Esther has no sympathy for the vile Benjamin who murdered a girl and then raped her. So Esther is angry when he tells her he wants to see her, even though he has days left for his death sentence. But then everything that happened in Esther's life was an intense experience. Meeting Benjamin, his pathetic look changes her mind. She begins her journey to get closer to the coffee house killer. But the evidence is against Benjamin, and Esther finds no such evidence in her travels. But at the end of the novel, Esther makes that discovery quite by accident. It was not Benjamin who carried out the rape of a girl named Jinu and killed five people but it was someone else.
What makes this book special is that the novelist is able to maintain that suspense until the end of the novel. Eagerness to understand what happens in the next chapter after each chapter is disturbed by the reading. Who committed those murders? Why did Benjamin fall victim to it? Why those murders? Why was a girl named Jinu killed and then raped? There were so many questions around Esther. These questions then spread from Esther to the reader and the reader panicks along with Esther.
Lajo's novel is also a landmark in the city of Kottayam. The city's famous restaurants, brand new clothes and famous shops are all mentioned in it. Esther is a woman who loves to wander around the city and eat well. Talking about Esther, she is a woman, not a police officer, but a journalist who enjoys civic life. A brilliant journalist with a keen intellect and observation. Limited reading suggests that this is the first detective novel in Malayalam to include such beautiful detailing. The novel is also a departure from traditional detective readings and the novel imitate International standard stories and writing styles.
The Coffee House ends with a suspense that opens the door to another chapter in Esther's life. The novel discusses social media, the jumps of passionate men, the attempts of men to mislead, and the social psychology of the girl living alone, beyond the scrutiny and the food. At the end of the novel, Lajo writes about his cinematic passion through Esther- How does Esther prove murder? Will Benjamin be sentenced to death by hanging? Therefore, Coffee House has the reputation of being the best suspense thriller.
